WHY DO WE COMPARE ? AND WAYS TO STOP.

As the famous quote goes, ” THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE “, which I believe perfectly captures what comparing is in a nutshell.

We often compare oursleves to others, on social media, when we meet people, or sometimes even those we are friends with. Often the root thought in comparing is that we want what they have, we think if we get what they have we will be happy and be finally content in our life. Let’s suppose we do get that, in most cases, we won’t be content, human beings have the endless cycle of wants. If we get that we will find someone else because there’s is always someone better than you in the world.

But I think that in the whole comparing process, if we obsess over too much, we start to loose ourselves in the process. We consciously or actively start to imitate the behaviour of that person , and gradually, we become someone else, who is not our authentic self, which is not right.

So, this was why we compare, now how do you stop?

  1. LIMIT YOUR TIME ON SOCIAL MEDIA  : Start spending less time on social media and start spending more time alone and doing nothing. Now why ? Because doing that will help you to know yourself better. If you can, unfollow the person you find yourself comparing to.
  2. USE IT AS MOTIVATION : Comparisons can be a great source of inspiration. Instead of envying what others have achieved, try to find out how they were able to achieve that and think of how you can too.
  3. FOCUS ON YOURSELF : Try to focus on your achievements in life and develop confidence in your abilities and skills by enhancing and working on them.
  4. PRACTICE GRATITUDE : This is in correspondence to the previous point. Everyday try to focus on the things you are grateful for in your life, your friends, your family etc.
  5. DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT’S COVER : Remember the people on social media are not who they seem to be, they might be struggling like you too. So, stop comparing their outsides to who you are on the inside.

So to conclude, I think that instead of envying others we should take inspiration. The saying goes ” the moon takes light from the sun and makes it its own and exists seperately”
