Pretty Privilege & The Body Positivity Movement

By

In Today’s era of fierce competition, be it social media, jobs, and even schools or colleges. Pretty Privilege is undeniable. Pretty Privilege means a person has more advantages and opportunities in life, and is seen to become more successful, if he/she is attractive or “pretty”.

Now the reason I put pretty in quotes, is because the concept of who is pretty has fascinated artists and researchers for years, earlier people coined phrases like pretty is “in the eye of the beholder”. Although, it might be true that people’s perception of pretty might vary, but there are some people who are just seen pretty in everyone’s eyes, and those are the people that are often seen reaping the advantages of pretty privilege.

This pretty privilege has led to a surge of people wanting to become pretty or more attractive, by going on crash diets and joining gyms just to be like him/her. I think social media has contributed to this significantly, we inevitably see pictures and reels of people who we envy because of their body, personality and attractiveness.

However, in recent events, there has been a counter to this concept and that is The Body Positivity Movement, floating all around social media. Accounts posting affirming reels, quotes etc. And it has benefitted a lot of people, who have found communities and a sense of comfort by this.

But in my humble opinion, and feel free to correct me on this, the fact that due to the body positivity movement, I have come to notice parts of me that I did not even pay attention to, or that did not even bother me till now, and the fact that you’re having to say that this is beautiful and it’s okay, points to the fact that it is less than ideal.

So, to conclude I leave you with this pretty privilege prevails undeniably, but I really do believe that everyone one of us can be pretty or attractive in our own way, like I can be only Angad pretty, and not anyone else.
