met my younger self for coffee today -a diary entry

By

So I met my younger self for coffee today. He was wearing black from head to toe, I was wearing my beige striped sweater and beige pants with my typical white sneakers which with their regular wear had gotten creased and smudged with dirt over their tips. He had his hair stuck back in time with a military cut, low maintenance and restricted to societal boxes, I had my hair long and parted in the middle, which my parents didn’t approve of.

He had a smile that held back the pain on his face, and I had a soft smile spread wide from ear to ear, we both sat down on the sunlit table. He indecisively flipped through the menu and ordered a frappe at last and I ordered my standard iced latte with two sugars.

He told me so excitedly about a new short story idea he had come up with and I excitedly listened to him, which was new to him as nobody else did. I showed him the copies of the two books we had published and he stained the covers with tears that flooded down from his face. I consoled him, and wiping his tears and taking a sip of his coffee he said, “we wrote this?” I nodded with a smile.

He asked me, “how are we doing? Did we make it?” I replied with a subtle sigh “we did! and we are happy but we still have a long way to go.” His eyes sparkled as he showed me pictures of people that were our best friends and I showed him pictures of which one of them stayed with us. The daylight dimmed to a solemn tone and so did our conversation when he asked me, “do we still feel lonely?” I smiled and replied “yes we do sometimes, but we are also content now.”

As he was leaving, he looked back and said “We’ll meet again right?” I nodded and hugging him said “yes we will.” And with that we both walked out of the cafe.

With Love,

Angad
