Who are we when no one is watching?

By

We all have two lives. The second begins when we realise we’re not performing for anyone anymore.

The quote couldn’t have summarised this piece in a better way. All of our life I think subconsciously we go about performing for everyone around us. Taking feedback, amending our ways, and trying to do better in our lives ahead. Kind of like an artist performing on a stage, for the claps and laughter of the fans.

And don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that improving on where you went wrong, is wrong. But in this whole process of constantly pleasing others, and trying to get everyone to like us, we lose our own sense of being, our own sense of self.

Which is why it becomes crucial to ask the question of “who you are away from all this? or when you are alone?” when everything is stripped away and you don’t have to put up an act for anyone. The mask comes off, who are you underneath? when the stage lights has been turned off, only thing that remains is yourself.

In this age of Social Media, everyone sort of puts up a fake facade. It becomes even more important to find ourselves in this chaos. When we are dancing in our room blasting songs, or singing while making your coffee, or crying your eyes out without judgements, that’s the moment when you are most yourself.

Because when you start accepting your full self — not despite the chaos, but because of it — something shifts. You begin to move through the world a little lighter. A little louder. A little more you.

And when that happens — when you show up as your unapologetic, unfiltered self — you begin to attract people who truly see you. People who stay. People who understand and accept you — all of you. Whether it’s a friend, a partner, or even just yourself… that’s when it starts to feel real. And you also embrace your own company and learn to protect your peace fiercely.

At last I leave you with the same question we started with to ponder upon for yourself:

“Who are you when no one is watching or when you don’t have to perform?”
