In this age where overconsumption, has become normalised, scrolling reels when you’re waiting, or when you’re going from your room to the kitchen even, listening to music when you’re going to the shop, all of us become so overwhelmed with information throughout the day.
Whether it is from scrolling through instagram reel, youtube shorts, twitter or even whatsapp now, we get contsant information from everywhere, and it has led to desensitization on so many levels.
The news flooded with deaths, suicides, rapes, and other devastating incidents has become so increasing in number that everyone of us are slowly but surely becoming desensitised to it all. These incidents have merely been left to the platforms of instagram story shares, which for spreading awareness is effective.
But in my humble opinion, I wanted to write about the simple of act of everyone of us just easily scrolling on these news, how desensitised we have become to everything now a days. We keep hearing this word: doomscrolling. It’s the act of endlessly consuming bad news even when it’s affecting your mental health. But what no one talks about is how, over time, you stop reacting to it. A school shooting? Horrible, yes. But your thumb still swipes up to the next post. Another rape? You sigh, maybe post it on your story. But that’s it. You go on.
There’s too much going on, everywhere, all at once. Every day the timeline is a new apocalypse—war, climate disaster, AI anxiety, assault cases, deaths, someone’s trauma turned into a 60-second Reel. There’s no time to process it, no space to breathe. It’s either be overwhelmed or emotionally detach. The overwhelming amount has led to desensitisation in this era.
